Terry passed away in Edmonton Alberta on October 25th, 2020 at the age of 88. He had spent two and a half years there dealing with advanced dementia while being helped by the loving support of his family in Edmonton.
Terry never stopped thinking about the village of Morell, where he made his home for 33 years following his retirement from the Air Force. He missed his daily walks into the village to visit the bank, Coop and Post Office. In the morning here in Edmonton, he would sometimes think that he needed to take his newspaper over to his sister-in-law Kay Sinnott after reading it. For years they shared the paper. He missed going out to breakfast and then going for a drive with Kay on Sundays after she came home from church as this was always a weekly highlight for him. In his later years on the Island, as his cognitive abilities waned, his appreciation for the Island’s beauty only grew. Sights which were once routine for him became new again and drives through the Island countryside were once again a thing of beauty.
In Edmonton, Terry often asked about his brothers and sisters in Ontario, with thoughts of their visits to his home in Morell holding fond memories for him. When we went out for dinner here in Edmonton, he would sometimes think we were at a family member’s house on the Island, as his wife Joan’s family on the Island had fully embraced Terry as a member of their family and always included him in family celebrations.
We very much enjoyed having Terry here with us in Edmonton and he truly loved seeing his granddaughters and great grandchildren. But his heart remained in Morell. Terry always had a picture of his wife Joan nearby and he missed having her at his side to share in his life in the house he’d hoped they would have built together.
Terry is now coming home to Morell to rest alongside Joan.
