It’s with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of Ken Doran from Cambridge, Ontario. He was in the process of relocating to St. Peter’s Harbour, PEI where he had always dreamed of retiring. He passed as a result of a pulmonary embolism in each lung. Loving husband to Janis for 35 years, and proud father of Zoe and Keegan (Alissa). He will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Always the author and planner, Ken had thankfully prepared his own obituary, below:
"Well, after 63 years I’ve kicked the bucket. Though sad I’ve turned off the lights for good, I’m
thankful for the wonderful life I’ve had and no one deserves more gratitude for that than my
“partner/roommate” Janis. From the first day I laid eyes on my “Little Punk Rocker,” I knew my
life would be more enjoyable and adventurous with her by my side. Not only did she make my
life complete, she mothered our two fabulous children Zoe and Keegan. My daughter-in-law
Alissa has been a great addition to our family. I wish them all good health and happiness.
My late parents Lenore and Ron provided me with an upbringing that lacked for nothing, and my
in-laws Margaret and Dennis (late) Pickersgill were the loving backbone to my own family.
Though I didn’t see my sisters, Terry and Sandy, as much as I should have, our bond remained
strong since childhood. Of the friends I’ve had throughout my life none has been as cherished as
Bob “Bubba” Haid. From our university football days together to being the best man at each
other’s weddings, our get-togethers (especially on New Year’s Eve with Terri-Lynn) and our
cribbage games were always fun.
Though I’ve certainly drank and eaten too much too many times over my lifetime, I’ve enjoyed
life. I have always believed that life is better when you’re having fun or just chilling out. I’ve had
lots of great times along the way, playing varsity football with a great bunch of guys at the
University of Waterloo (graduating with a Recreation Studies degree in 1987), travelling to the
Caribbean, England, the U.S, Europe and the Maritimes. I've enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, cycling
and snowshoeing. As for jobs, I’ve been a “petroleum engineer”, tobacco primer, pub bouncer,
group home worker, freelance sports reporter, liquor store employee and a published author,
although I spent most of my working life (over three decades) as a Recreation Therapist in
mental health hospitals.
Despite all my shenanigans, my greatest source of pride and happiness has been my family. So,
don’t shed any tears on my behalf, just lift a favourite drink in my memory. Now, take care,
enjoy life and bugger off!”
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. If desired, donations in Ken’s memory may be made to
The Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences and memories can be shared at
