John Hughes Obituary

The death occurred on Thursday, March 09, 2023 at the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge in Belfast, PE of John Reginald “Reg” Hughes, at the age of 93.  Born in Riverton, PE he was the son of the late Teresa Mae (Trainor) and Hugh Owen Hughes.  Reg was known in his younger years as an amazing baseball player, playing in both PE and NS.  He had many friends at the Gillis Lodge and was known for his big heart by fellow residents and staff.  The family is immensely grateful for the wonderful care and respect that the staff  provided to Reg.  He is survived by his brother Raymond of Massachusetts as well as numerous nieces,  nephews and their families.  Besides his parents, Teresa and Hugh, he was predeceased by his sisters; Mary, Pearl, and Helen; by his brothers, James, Harry, Bernard and Joseph.  Resting at St. Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Teresa, for visitation on Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 4 -7 pm.  Funeral mass to take place at the church on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 10:30 am.  Interment in the parish cemetery.  If desired, memorial donations in Reg’s memory may be made to St. Cuthbert’s Cemetery Fund.  To send the family an online condolence, please see below.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to North Shore Funeral Home, Morell.


The funeral for the late John Reginald “Reg” Hughes was held on Monday, March 13, 2023, at St. Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Teresa, with Father Danny Wilson officiating. Laying the Pall were Alice Sullivan, Ann Dewar, Joanie Hughes, and Pam Campbell. The first reading was read by Debbie Hughes, while Matthew Hughes proclaimed the second reading. Sarah Campbell offered the prayers of intercession. Father Wilson read the gospel and delivered the homily. The pallbearers consisted of Joseph P. Hughes, Ivan Hughes, Eugene Hughes, George Hughes, Parnell Hughes, and John Allan Hughes. Honorary pallbearers included everyone in attendance. Music was provided by St. Cuthbert’s Church Choir with organist, Michelle MacDonald and director, Mary Trainor singing, Processional, Be Not Afraid; Psalm, The Lord is My Shepherd; Preparation of gifts, Peace is Flowing Like a River; Communion, Peace Prayer; Incensing, Songs of the Angels; and Recessional, We Shall Go Out. Interment was in the parish cemetery. The funeral was under the direction of North Shore Funeral Home, Morell.
