James (Jim) Burke Obituary

The death occurred on February 4, 2023 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, following a lengthy illness, of James William (Jim) Burke of Orwell Cove, formerly of Georgetown, aged 79.  Survived by his loving wife, Sharron (Cunningham); his son, John, Halifax, NS and his stepson, Bruce (Brenda) Spice, Colborne, ON.  Also survived by brothers, Anthony and Cecil (Doreen);  sisters, Hilda Burke (Stephen) and Lauretta (Billy) Landry; sister-in-law, Linda Gowing-Burke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by parents, William and Cecilia (Clarkin);  brothers Stewart and Wayne; sisters, Agnas (in infancy), Virginia (Danny) McAleese and Mary Guignard.  Resting at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Georgetown, for visitation on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 from 7 – 9 p.m.  Funeral mass to be held at the church on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 2 p.m.  Interment at a later date in the parish cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, or St. James Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund, or the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry would be appreciated.  To send the family an online condolence, please see below.   Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to North Shore Funeral Home, Morell.  Please note, the funeral will be recorded and will be made available for viewing shortly after its conclusion. The funeral for the late James William “Jim” Burke was held on Thursday, February 09, 2023, at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Georgetown, with Father Kishore Kumar and Father Danny Wilson officiating. Altar Servers were John Gotell and Tony Thijssen. Laying the Pall were John Burke and Bruce Spice. The first reading was read by Sid McMullin while Claranne Lavandier proclaimed the second reading. Linda Gowing-Burker offered the prayers of intercession. Father Danny Wilson read the gospel and delivered the homily. The pallbearers consisted of John Burke, Billy Landry, Jeff Burke, Scott Guignard, Wallace MacMaster, and Gordie Stewart. Honorary pallbearers included everyone in attendance. Flower Bearers were Peyton Burke and Margaret Carpenter. Music was provided by St. James Choir with organist Haley Zavo, and soloist Sid McMullin singing, Processional, In the Garden; Psalm, The Lord is My Shepherd; Preparation of gifts, Prayer of St. Francis; Communion, Come to the Water; Incensing, Celtic Farewell; and Recessional, How Great Thou Art. Interment will take place at a later date in the parish cemetery. The funeral was under the direction of North Shore Funeral Home, Morell.
